Dear NAFAns,

 

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF) invites your students to partake in our 2014 Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Research Experience.  This summer research program brings together underrepresented* minority undergraduate students in the STEM fields for the summer to experience laboratory research under the mentorship of premier Rensselaer faculty.  Rensselaer calls on your students to apply!

 

This eight week program is designed to help curious and solution-oriented students gain confidence in the lab, develop enthusiasm for graduate school, cultivate a professional network, and earn attractive qualifications. Participants will participate in professional development activities and present their research. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is located in upstate New York, 110 Eighth Street, Troy, NY 12180.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., leads the world in scientific discovery and understanding. Goddard is the home of innovative Earth science, astrophysics, heliophysics and planetary science. The center's diverse and talented team is responsible for each breakthrough emerging from Goddard laboratories.  From high school interns to accomplished Nobel Prize winners, each member of the Goddard team plays a vital role in mission success.

Goddard is a science and engineering Center, with enabling technologies like computer science and IT management, to support missions to explore and observe the Earth from space, the study of the sun, exploration of the solar system, and to address big questions such as the origins of life on Earth.

GSFC studies the Earth from space with missions like the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission, or GPM.  GPM is an international satellite mission to provide next-generation observations of rain and snow worldwide every three hours, and is scheduled for launch on February 27th.

GSFC studies the Universe and is now building the James Webb Space Telescope.  Scheduled for launch in 2018, the JWST is a large space observatory that will operate in an orbit some 1 million miles from Earth to find the first galaxies that formed in the early universe.

We offer internships and fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students throughout the year. Students are engaged in research projects under the guidance of JPL scientists and engineers, and experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity. Our goal is to further students' pursuit of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Research projects are offered in areas such as computer science, robotics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, astrophysics, electrical engineering, as well as planetary, geological and biological sciences.

In August 2013, JPL was named one of "The 10 Most Awesome College Labs of 2013" by Popular Science.

The Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) hosts a ten week Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program where students work collaboratively on a wide variety of computational science projects. Each student receives a stipend of $5,000, free housing in university dormitories, and up to $600 in travel expenses to and from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Nine students will be selected.

Qualifications:
Undergraduate, community college student, or high school senior attending college in the fall, interested in a major that is within the computational sciences umbrella (leaves out few majors as it includes all sciences, mathematics, engineering, finance, statistics, etc.) with at least a 2.75 GPA, considering a career in research and/or graduate school in your major, being a US citizen or permanent resident, and graduating at least one semester after completion of the REU.

Important Dates:
March 1, 2014: Application deadline.
April 1, 2014: Notification of decision.
May 26, 2014 through August 1, 2014: Program dates.

The research activities of the CCT are organized into five Focus Areas: Core Computing Sciences, Coast to Cosmos, Material World, Cultural Computing, and System Science and Engineering. These are broad, and sometimes overlapping areas where faculty from diverse departments (Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Civil Engineering, Oceanography and Coastal Sciences, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computing Engineering, Music, Business, etc.) collaborate in multidisciplinary projects. This is a reminder that applications are still being accepted for the Summer Institutes for Training in Biostatistics (SIBS).

Eight Summer Institutes for Training in Biostatistics (SIBS) are scheduled for the summer of 2014. SIBS are open to all US undergraduate and beginning graduate students (US citizens or permanent residents) and are sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Center for Research Resources. The programs have been very successful, but space is limited!

The program flyer explains that SIBS is offered at eight sites: Boston University, Columbia University, Emory University, University of Iowa, University of Minnesota, North Carolina State University-Duke Clinical Research Institute, University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Further details are given at the individual websites listed on the flyer.

SIBS introduces quantitatively oriented participants to Biostatistics. Students learn about the applications of statistical methods to biomedical research through coursework and hands-on experience working with real data collected in major clinical studies. Each of the program sites has its own unique features, but they all have a well-conceived, balanced agenda and an outstanding staff of dedicated investigators and professors. No specific training in statistics is required as a prerequisite.

Participants receive college credit that can transfer back to their home institutions. All costs are covered including tuition, housing, and all meals. Students may apply to more than one program, but should accept only one.

The CRISP Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) program.

The goal of the CRISP REU program is to offer high-quality, state-of-the-art research experiences, enrichment activities and professional development events to undergraduates. Current research topics range from thin film growth and characterization to friction and manipulation at the atomic level with projects involving computation, simulation, fabrication, characterization and image processing. Materials systems included semiconductors, dielectrics, optical materials and bio-materials.

Program Dates June 2 - July 28, 2014

Application Candidates must apply directly to the Yale SURF program through the Leadership Alliance Summer Research-Early Identification Program starting November 01, 2013. Students must also complete the supplementary application for CRISP to indicate interest. Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program – Now Accepting Applications for Summer 2014!


The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program, sponsored by the Office of Fossil Energy (FE), U.S. Department of Energy, is now accepting applications for a10-week summer internship.  MLEF's mission is to improve opportunities for women and minority students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, but all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. The program allows students to apply their academic achievements to actual research while gaining hands-on experience.

Selected MLEF Fellows will receive a bi-weekly stipend, approved travel costs to/from their host site and will attend a Technical Forum to present their project at the end of the internship.

Eligibility

To qualify for the program, students must:

·         Be at least 18 years of age

·         Be a U.S. Citizen

·         Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

·         Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university (sophomore year or higher)

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship seeks to increase communication skills in student scientists. From grant writing to interaction with their community, today's young scientists must also be able science communicators. The lessons they learn through the Fellowship experience will broaden their career paths and help them increase public understanding of science and technology.

The Fellowship places advanced undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate science, engineering, and mathematics students at media sites nationwide to work as science reporters for ten weeks. Past sites include the Chicago Tribune, WIRED, NPR, LA Times, and Scientific American. Fellows use their academic training in the sciences as they research, write and report today's headlines, sharpening their abilities to communicate complex scientific and technical issues to the public.

For 39 years, the Fellowship has trained student scientists who have gone on to contribute to the larger scientific discussion including Eric Lander, Founding Director The Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, and Kenneth Chang and Erica Goode of the New York Times.

AAAS wishes to focus on serving the growing Latino populations of the U.S. by supporting science communication and education in the language of those communities and by addressing issues of importance to the communities. Summer ORISE Fellowship Opportunity at CDC

 

Introduction

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS), is seeking Summer ORISE Fellows to focus on public health issues related to the environment.  Candidates will join projects associated with developing and applying new methods to characterize and quantitate biochemical markers that are relevant in environmental exposures and chronic diseases.  The fellowship carries a stipend of approximately $2,700 per month for full-time undergraduate student fellows and $3,300 for full-time graduate student fellows.

 

Qualifications

Current undergraduate and graduate students majoring in chemistry or biology and who have completed or expect to complete three years of coursework in chemistry or biology before the start of the fellowship may apply.  They must also be able to comply with safety and security requirements before or upon reporting to CDC.

The CRISP Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) program.

The goal of the CRISP REU program is to offer high-quality, state-of-the-art research experiences, enrichment activities and professional development events to undergraduates. Current research topics range from thin film growth and characterization to friction and manipulation at the atomic level with projects involving computation, simulation, fabrication, characterization and image processing. Materials systems included semiconductors, dielectrics, optical materials and bio-materials.

Program Dates June 2 - July 28, 2014

Application Candidates must apply directly to the Yale SURF program through the Leadership Alliance Summer Research-Early Identification Program starting November 01, 2013. Students must also complete the supplementary application for CRISP to indicate interest. The entire application package, including two letters of recommendation and official transcript(s), must be received by February 01, 2014.

General Information

 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has a long history and interest in providing hands-on research experiences to students at all academic levels.  Over the years, these research experience programs have enhanced students' academic curricula and at the same time have helped the Laboratory (1) develop its own workforce and (2) contribute to the national vision for excellence in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. ORNL is a multi-program science and technology laboratory managed for the U.S. Department (DOE) by UT-Battelle, LLC.  Scientists and engineers at ORNL conduct basic and applied research and development to create scientific knowledge and technological solutions that strengthen the nation's leadership in key areas of sciences, engineering, mathematics, and technology.  ORNL scientists are also fully supportive of their responsibility to help mentor the next generation of scientists.

Selection

 

Applicants are selected based on academic achievements, scientific interests, and career goals.

 

Stipend

 

Participants will receive a stipend based on academic level.  Plus some programs provide a housing allowance, and one round trip to and from the lab from your university or home.  Certain eligibility requirements will need to be met in order to be eligible for the housing and travel.  See information provided on web site.
